Last updated on Monday, August 6, 2012

(BERMUDA) - Alex Doty, Chair of Indiana University’s Department of Communication and culture, died Wednesday after a motorcycle accident in Bermuda.

Doty died after being hit by a suspected impaired driver of a motorcycle as he walked along Pitts Bay Road.

The name of the 27-year-old impaired driver of the motorcycle was not released.

Doty was on vacation and had only been in the country for about three hours, when the accident happened.

Doty suffered massive head trauma and severe bleeding in his brain.

Executive Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and professor of Political Science Jean Robinson will assume chair responsibilities until an interim chair is named.

On a Facebook page called "Friends of Alex Doty," more than 400 members of the social networking site have joined to share memories of the gender studies professor. Patricia Ingham, an IU English professor, posted a note on the site, stating Doty had been at the intensive care unit at King Edward VII Memorial Hospital before being taken off of a ventilator Saturday and succumbing to massive bleeding in his brain.

According to the Royal Gazette in Bermuda, a 27-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of driving while impaired, striking Doty, 58, around 11 p.m. Wednesday.

Ingham did her best to assure everyone Doty was well cared for after the accident.

"The only other thing I have to tell you is that the team at the hospital said that Alex was not, and had not been, in any pain," she wrote to the group. "Alex had only been in Bermuda for about (three) hours when the accident occurred. Apparently, he checked into the hotel, went off to a concert, and was walking back to his room when he was hit."
