(FAYETTEVILLE) - Josh and his wife Chiffon Cameron were at the banks of Indian Creek near High Water Road, Sunday night fishing when it began to rain.
"We were headed back to our vehicle and that is when I looked down and that is when I saw it," Josh says. "The bone, which looked human, was blackish in color and looked like it had been there awhile."
Josh, who was a command investigator and military police officer for the U.S. Navy for more than 14 years, knew the find could be serious so he called police. Cameron retired as a disabled veteran in 2010.
"It looked to me that it possibly could be human," Josh says. "I have seen a lot of things in my military career and knew I could be looking at human remains, so my first call was to the Sheriff's Department and they notified the coroner."
Lawrence County Coroner John Sherrill recovered the bone and it was taken to be examined.
"It is unknown at this time if the bone is human," Craig says.
Cameron says the bone never would have been found if the drought hadn't hit, causing the water to be about 4 feet lower than it should be.
"It could have gotten there from up river," Cameron says. "Not far upstream, the water is about 6 to 7 feet deep. It's hard to tell how long the bone has been there, but if it is human, the family that is missing a loved one needs closure."
Cameron hopes those investigating the incident have results soon.
"You hate to find something like that and know it could possibly be human remains," he added. "It could be an animal bone and the case would be close, but if not officers will have to open an investigation and search for more remain. But if it is human remain, I know a family that is missing a loved one would want answers. I would."
