Brownstown Reserve Officer Hurt In Jail Tussle

Last updated on Friday, August 17, 2012

(BROWNSTOWN) - A scuffle Tuesday night at the Jackson County Jail left a volunteer police officer injured and a Seymour man charged with battery.

Dan Davis of the Tribune reports that Reserve Officer Scott Davis of Seymour hurt his right arm while attempting to help two jailers subdue a man taken to the jail on a charge of driving while intoxicated around 11 p.m. Tuesday.

Hugh Allen Reynolds, 35, Seymour, was charged with battery with serious bodily injury, Sheriff Mike Carothers said Wednesday.

"He became disruptive and a scuffle ensued," Carothers said. "That's when (Davis) was injured."

Davis may be off work six to eight weeks with damage to tendons in his upper right arm, Carothers said.

No one else was hurt in the incident.

Davis was at the jail after having earlier arrested a woman involved in a dispute, Carothers said.

"We were booking in Mr. Reynolds, and in that process it was determined he was go¬ing to be transported to (Schneck Medical Center in Seymour) to have a blood test drawn," Davis said Wednesday. "In the process of putting the shackles on his feet, Mr. Reynolds resisted the jail officers, and I tried to help, causing the injuries to my right arm."

Reynolds eventually was restrained by the jail staff, Davis said.

Davis is one of 17 reserve officers who volunteer their time to assist the sheriff's department.
