(UNDATED) - Jackson County Water Utility has issued a precautionary boil water advisory - the second in less than two weeks - for residents in the west central part of the county.
Utility manager Darrell Baker reported an outage Wednesday morning as a result of a broken water pipe.
"It's a situation that happens," he said. "When the temperature changes, the ground moves, and you will have that."
The area affected begins at the junction of County Road 325N and County Road 1100W and goes north to include the area around Norman in Jackson County and around Zelma in the northeastern part of Lawrence County.
Baker said service was quickly restored, but he advised customers to boil water vigorously for at least five minutes before drinking or using for food preparation.
Boiling water is not necessary for other purposes, such as washing clothes or bathing, he said.
The advisory will be in effect until the utility has completed testing on the water to make sure bacteria is not present.
Baker said testing is expected to take three days, at which time customers will be advised if further action is necessary.
"We got our first sample (Wednesday), and we should know something by Friday," Baker said.
