Bedford Police Officer Dayson Smith Honored

Last updated on Tuesday, August 21, 2012

(BEDFORD) - Bedford Police Officer Dayson Smith was given a letter of commendation at the Bedford Board of Works Meeting Monday afternoon.

The commendation was for apprehending an armed robber on June 28th.

BPD Major Danny Irwin nominated Smith for the award and BPD Chief Dennis Parsley presented the letter.

According to Irwin's letter Smith was just a block away when an armed robber walked into the Walgreen's Pharmacy, told the clerk he had a gun and stole several hydromorpone pills.

Bedford residents assisted Smith with tracking the man down, by providing information on which way he ran.

Smith found 37-year-old Eric Kern, who was armed with a pipe, in the parking lot of Circle K at 14th and l streets. Kern refused to cooperate and had to be physically restrained until assistance arrived.

Smith credits the arrest to those citizens who assisted him in tracking Kern.

"If it wasn't for them giving me directions on which way he ran, I wouldn't have been able to make the arrest," Smith says. "This commendation really needs to go to the citizens of Bedford."
