(BEDFORD) - Bedford's policy for overtime compensation will change beginning Oct. 1st.

Bob Bridge of the Times-Mail reports that Tuesday night, during a meeting of the city council, members voted 6-0 to amend the city's overtime ordinance.

Mayor Shawna Girgis says the action was based on extensive research conducted by Kyle Brown, director of operations, and Greg Pittman, city attorney.

Girgis says the policy was inconsistent across city departments.

The policies were much more liberal than the federal overtime provisions in the Fair Labor Standards Act and were costing the city taxpayers thousands of dollars each year.

Girgis says the city is committed to their employees, but the city must also be fiscally responsible to the taxpayers.

The new policy eliminates an employee's ability to count paid vacation days, sick days, holidays and compensatory time off as "time worked" for the purpose of calculating overtime.
