Woman Dies In Crash, East Of Switz City

Last updated on Tuesday, July 3, 2012

(SWITZ CITY) - A Switz City woman died from injuries sustained in a single vehicle wreck Monday afternoon on State Road 54, west of the Greene County Fairgrounds.

Nick Schneider of the Greene County Daily World reports that Bobbette Muckerheide, 60, was pronounced dead at the scene of multiple injuries after her westbound Buick Sedan left the roadway, crossed the center line for unknown reasons and struck a tree, about 500 feet west of County Road 475W, according to Greene County Sheriff Terry Pierce.

The tree was an estimated 20 feet from the roadway.

"I don't think speed was a factor," Sheriff Pierce said from the scene of the 2:19 p.m. crash. "There were no apparent brake marks."

Fire department personnel from Grant-Fairplay Township (Switz City) and Worthington Fire Territory had to extricate Muckerheide from the wreckage, the sheriff said.

During the aftermath and clean-up of the crash site, traffic was detoured off of State Road 54 from the State Road 67 intersection in Switz City and the State Road 57/U.S. 231 intersection (Light house Junction) for more than an hour.

Also assisting at the scene were deputies from the Greene County Sheriff's Department, officers from the Worthington and Lyons police departments as well as the Indiana State Police.

Cause of the wreck remains under investigation.
