(ORLEANS) - According to Lonnie Stroud with the Orange County Health Department, there has been a big jump in West Nile Virus transmission in the mosquito population.

The most recent results indicated 15 new pools testing positive for West Nile Virus and 8 new counties for this year.

Due to the dry weather, nuisance biters are certainly few and far between in many areas, it should be emphasized that what water is out there that is likely stagnant makes good breeding sites.

Stroud reminds residents to be diligent about emptying anything on their property that is holding water.

The Indiana State Health Department has collected 50,934 mosquitoes from 82 counties, divided into 705 pools. Twenty one counties in Indiana have tested positive for the West Nile Virus.
