Two Injured After Being Thrown From Boat

Last updated on Monday, July 23, 2012

(PATOKA) - Two people were injured after they were thrown from their boat near Goose Island on Patoka Reservoir Saturday afternoon.

Indiana Conservation Officers say 32 Leslie Ash, of Louisville, was driving a 2005 Honda Personal Watercraft at speeds over fifty miles per hour in rough water conditions.

The boat hit a wave and went airborne throwing 14-year-old Preston Barrett Jr. from the boat. Ash hit the side of the boat and was then thrown into the water.

Barrett flown by helicopter to Kosair's Children's with head injuries. Ash was flown to University of Louisville Hospital with back injuries.

Drugs or alcohol do not appear to be involved in the accident. Proper Coast Guard approved Personal Floatation Devices (PFDs) were worn by the occupants which played a role in this being an injury accident instead of a fatality.

Indiana Conservation Officers would like to remind all boaters to wear their PFDs when enjoying Indiana's beautiful lakes and streams.

Indiana Conservation Officers were assisted by IU Health Ambulance Service and Orange County Rural District 1 VFD.
