(SALEM) - Two people were killed in two separate and unintentional shootings last week in Salem.

The first occurred Wednesday evening and involved an 18-year-old Salem man.

Colin Cornett was target shooting on his grandfather's property, on West Cornett Lane. He apparently believed the .22 caliber pistol he was using was unloaded.

His girlfriend told police she turned around to get her phone and heard the gun discharge.

Deputy Wanye Blevins. Says there was no indiction of foul play or suicide, it's was just a very bad deal.

Cornett was taken to St. Vincent Salem Hospital then flown to University of Louisville. He died the next afternoon.

The second death was Saturday night and was reported with a 911 call at 9:55 p.m. Indiana State Police and sheriff's department found 33-year-old Michael Bayless dead from a single shot.

Bayless was watching TV with two of his children when his other child, a 3-year-old boy, found a loaded handgun. The gun unintentionally discharged, killing Bayless.

The Bayless, who live in Martinsville, were at the home they on West Vincennes Trail on the weekends, to work on remodeling it.

Law enforcement officers remind all residents to practice gun safety. Keep all guns out of the reach of children, preferably locked in a safe.

Use caution whenever handling a firearm. Even if you believe a weapon to be unloaded, treat every gun as if it is loaded. Never, ever point a gun at something you don't intend to shoot.

Free gun locks are available through the sheriff's department.
