(MEDORA) - Two young girls from the Medora area were taken to Schneck Medical Center in Seymour on Tuesday afternoon after they were found inside an unlocked car at their home.
Aubrey Woods of the Tribune reports that the incident ended much better than it could have, Sheriff Michael Carothers said.
He said the girls, who are 2-year-old twin sisters, were outside with some other children playing at their home in the 8000 block of West County Road 100 South when the older children went inside the home.
He said it is believed the sisters may have been in the car for 10 to 20 minutes before they were found by their mother.
Police did not release their names.
Carothers said the children, who ranged in ages from 2 to 11, had been playing some kind of game, possibly hide-and- seek.
"Mom went out looking for them and saw them inside the car," Carothers said. He said the girls were lying on the floorboard of the vehicle when the mother found them, but they sat up when she started screaming.
"They were taken to the hospital to be checked out, and dad went with them to keep them calm," Carothers said.
He said police were able to determine there was nothing criminal about the incident. Carothers said the incident is a strong reminder of the dangers of heat and closed cars.
"You really need to keep track of your children," he said. Leaving children and pets inside closed vehicles can quickly turn fatal, he added.
Recently, a child in Greenfield died after being left inside a locked car on a sweltering day.
The high temperature in Brownstown reached 94 degrees Tuesday with a heat index of 104. Hot, humid weather is expected to continue throughout the rest of this week.
