(BEDFORD) - Two people were hurt when the driver swerved to miss an animal in the road.
While police were investigating that accident a second accident happened.
The accidents happened Saturday on U.S. 50 East, west of Leatherwood Circle Road.
The driver in the first accident, 41-year-old Martha Sweat, of Bloomington, suffered bleeding from her head as did her passenger, 42-year-old James Rodman, of Greencastle.
According to a Lawrence County Police report when Officer Cody Medlock arrived on the scene he found Sweat's vehicle inverted on the south side of the road. Both Sweat and Rodman were lying near the car.
Both also complained of body pain and were assisted by first responders from Shawswick Volunteer Fire Department and bystanders.
Sweat told Medlock she was reading the newspaper and had looked up to see a squirrel in the roadway. She then swerved her 1997 Ford truck to miss an animal, however witnesses to the wreck says there were no animals in the roadway. Medlock says Sweat was extremely agitated and emotional and had slurred speech and unorganized thoughts. Sweat was given a sobriety test.
The second accident occurred at 4:10 p.m. when one of the drivers, 45-year-old Kimberlee Mayners, of Bedford, vehicle was hit by a 1996 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera driven by 32-year-old Ruby Wagoner, of Heltonville.
According to a police report, Wagoner had turned her car around in order to travel east on U.S. 50 to take an alternate route around the accident and that when she saw the police car and Mayners' stopped for the first accident. Wagoner told police she thought she had enough room to get past Mayners' vehicle and the police car. But Wagoner's car hit the driver's side of Mayners' vehicle with the back rear portion of her Cutlass. Mayners complained of pain but refused medical treatment at the scene and was transported to IU Health Bedford Hospital by private vehicle. Wagoner was not injured.
