Nursing Mothers Will Gather For Big Latch On Event

Last updated on Sunday, July 29, 2012

(PAOLI) - On Aug. 3-4 at 10:30 a.m. thousands of breastfeeding women and their babies/children across the world will gather in their own communities to take part in the Big Latch On, a synchronized breastfeeding event in multiple locations.

The following Big Latch On events will take place in Orange County to celebrate World
Breastfeeding Week:

* Aug. 3 from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.: Big Latch On and baby fair at Indiana University Health Paoli Hospital's lobby. Community agencies will participate with booths, information and free gifts.

* Aug. 4: La Leche League of Orange County will host its second annual Big Latch On at the Orleans Farmers' Market. Breastfeeding information and support will be available.
For both events, nursing mothers should arrive by 10 a.m. to register and settle in with the Big Latch On at 10:30 a.m.

* Aug. 1-7 is World Breastfeeding Week. It is observed to raise awareness of the benefits of breastfeeding and the need for global support.

The first Big Latch On took place in New Zealand in 2005. The Big Latch On is informed by the principles of community development, providing the opportunity for breastfeeding women to get together in their local communities, host their own events, and identify opportunities for on-going support.

Breastfeeding contributes to the normal growth and development of babies/children.

Babies and children who are not breastfed are at increased risk of infant morbidity and mortality, adult obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, and premenopausal breast cancer and ovarian cancer (both mom and baby).

The World Health Organization recommends breastfeeding exclusively for the first six months of a baby's life to optimize these benefits, and continuing for two years and as long thereafter as is mutually desired by a woman and her child.
