Naked Gunman Seeks Reduction In Bond

Last updated on Saturday, July 7, 2012

(BLOOMINGTON) - Corey Hamersley, the naked gunman police say shot more than 30 rounds from a 9mm semi-automatic gun at a house, cars and at an officer, will have to wait a few more days for a judge to determine if his bond will be reduced so he can return to his parents’ home and enter a drug rehabilitation program.

Abby Tonsing, of the Herald Times reports, Hamersley, 21, faces felony charges of attempted murder; two counts of criminal recklessness, one for shooting a firearm into an inhabited dwelling and the other for using a deadly weapon; two counts of pointing a firearm at another person; and possession of a controlled substance. The Indiana University student also faces misdemeanor charges of resisting law enforcement and possession of drugs.

On May 11, Bloomington police confronted Hamersley, who was wearing only flip flops and a ballcap, firing a gun in the 300 block of East 15th Street, near Terra Trace Apartments. Police report Hamersley shot at the back of a house, at three cars and twice at officer Dana Runnebohm, according to a probable-cause affidavit on the case. When Hamersley refused to drop his gun after repeated orders to do so by police, Officer Trae Luck shot him once in the leg. When Hamersley sat up and aimed the gun again, Sgt. Joe Crider shot him in the other leg.

At a bail review hearing Thursday afternoon, Senior Judge Douglas Bridges, sitting in for Monroe County Judge Kenneth Todd, said he'd make a decision in three days as to whether or not to reduce Hamersley's bond, which is currently set at $500,000 surety and $5,000 cash.

Hamersley told the court that he has no plans to hurt himself or others and he does not have access to weapons at his parents' home in Sheridan.
