Mitchell Looking Into Addressing Sanitation Issues At Boarding Houses

Last updated on Tuesday, July 3, 2012

(MITCHELL) - The Mitchell City Council is working on producing an ordinance to address issues concerning rooming house.

The ordinance would require rooming houses to purchase a $25 license to operate the facility.

Before the license would be issued the property would have to be inspected by Mitchell's Assistant Street Commissioner Steve Burton.

The ordinance came about after Councilman Matt England said he received complaints about sanitation issues at the city's two boarding houses

* Bryon Steele addressed city zoning after Council President Nancy Miller had asked him to see if he could found out anything more about the issue.

Mayor Gary Pruett says Midwestern Engineers, which did the previous zoning plan that was never implemented, did not have anything on the issue.

Steele says he will check his records to see if he could find any information, if not the city may have to start from scratch and create something simpler and easier to understand.

* Steele told the council that the city now owns all of Mitchell Cemetery. Last month the council learned from Steele that the plat map from six years ago didn't match the cemetery map.

He found that the northwest section of the cemetery which fronts Teke Burton Drive was deeded to Arthur Conley.

The deed was supposed to be switched from Conley to the city, but that section was never included.

Steele filed a quiet title and it was signed by Judge Michael Robbins and now will be filed at the courthouse.

* Nancy Miller told the council she received another complaint about the Mitchell Police Department not providing accident reports in a timely matter.

Miller says the woman who complained says it has been three weeks since the accident and she still doesn't have her accident report.

Mayor Pruett says sometimes there is two sides to the story, meaning that information has not been give to police, thus not allowing them to complete the reports.

*Mayor Pruett told the council that he received a complaint about motorist making U-turns on Main Street. He has directed the street department to place no U-turn signs on Main Street.

* Councilwoman Vicky Schlegel says she has received several complaints about the large dumpster at a residence on Oak Street.

Schlegel says the dumpster has been at the home since February.

Schlegel will research the regulations that other cities have on the placement of dumpsters and report back to the board.

She would like to see the city draft an ordinance so that residents will need to have a permit to have a dumpster and that there is a time limit on how long the dumpster can be at any residence.

Steve Burton will talk to the resident and see when the dumpster will be removed.

* Mayor Pruett says the emergency lighting at the Senior Citizen Center and the Community Building have been replaced with LED lights and that all of the cities buildings have been posted with occupancy limit signs and temporary 'no smoking' signs.

He says new 'no smoking' signs have been ordered and will replace the temporary signs when they come in.
