(MITCHELL) - The Mitchell Hillbilly 500 is less than three weeks away.

The race is set for August 4th. Registration will be from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the top of the railroad overpass on Teke Burton Drive, behind Hoosier Hills Credit Union.

The only cost to race is the donation of canned goods or toiletry items to benefit the Lawrence Interfaith Endeavor Food Pantry.

The race will feature four age groups: kids ages 5-8, kids ages 9-13, teens ages 14-17 and adults older than 18.

It kicks off at noon, and Teke Burton Drive will close from just north of Orchard Street down to Main Street.

Event organizers say the race drew 28 participants and hundreds of spectators last year.

Copies of the rules are or at both the Mitchell Community Library and the Bedford Public Library.

Organizers say it's important to remember that the race isn't a soapbox derby - it's a "Hillbilly Race", meaning that the carts should resemble a hillbilly jalopies with only steering, brakes and four wheels in common. There are no motors; the carts are required to free-roll down a ramp for 500 feet. The first one across the finish line wins.

A cart last year was clocked at 26 miles per hour.
