(BROWNSTOWN) - A memorial service for Hunter Hogan, a 2009 graduate of Brownstown Central High School killed in combat June 23 in Afghanistan, will be held at noon Friday at Brownstown Community Church.
Aubrey Woods, of the Tribune reports, the Rev. Mike Patton, pastor of the church at 117 W. Tanner St., said the service is being conducted in conjunction with Hogan's burial in Nebraska. The local service is open to the public. "This s a way for local people to pay their respects and say thanks to Hunter," Patton said. "He was a Jackson County boy."
Hogan, 21, died during combat operations in Helmand province in Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
A lance corporal, he was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp LeJeune, N.C.
Hogan grew up in the Clearspring area in western Jackson County.
Hogan is survived by his wife, Brittney Hogan of New Bern, N.C., whom he married about a year before his death.
The church will open its doors at 11 a.m. Friday to allow the public to view a collection of photos and other items related to the time Hogan spent in Brownstown and Jackson County, Patton said.
At noon, the Rev. Gary Morning will conduct a memorial service. After the service, an honor guard from Crothersville Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1083 will conduct a 21¬gun salute around the church's flagpole. Taps also will be played.
After the service, food and refreshments will be served.
