(BLOOMINGTON) - It has been five months since Bloomington rocker John Mellencamp and his family lost their mother Marilyn, an artist and passionate supporter for the arts.
In an effort to continue Marilyn Mellencamp's dedication to the arts, the Mellencamp family has established the Marilyn Mellencamp Scholarship for the Arts and is hosting a day of art and music to raise funds for the scholarship.
"In honor and remembrance of Marilyn Mellencamp's talents and appreciation of the arts, we, the Mellencamp family, wanted to establish a scholarship in her name to lend financial assistance to a deserving student desiring to further their education in art, music, or theatre," said Marilyn's daughter Janet Mellencamp Kiel in an email.
An art show and free concert will take place Saturday at the Southern Indiana Center for the Arts in Seymour.
The art show is at 1 p.m. and will feature almost 50 paintings by Marilyn. Live music starts at 6 p.m., with headlining act Brent James and the Contraband performing at 9 p.m.
Donations raised will go toward the scholarship, which the family hopes to continue for years to come.
Family friend Monica Stuckwisch, who is helping with the event, said the show will not only provide a day full of entertainment, but will help a great cause.
"It's a celebration of the art work that Marilyn has done and it also gives the chance to a high school senior that's pursuing (the arts) to help toward their tuition," Stuckwisch said.
The concert will take place outside, so participants are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets.
