Man Shot During Domestic Fight In Linton

Last updated on Tuesday, July 3, 2012

(LINTON) - Indiana State Police detectives are investigating a mid-morning Friday shooting in Lyons which sent a man to an Indianapolis hospital by medical helicopter.

Nick Schneider of the Greene County Daily World reports that the shooting victim, 56-year-old Jess George, was transported by Air-Evac to IU Health Methodist Hospital with a single gunshot wound to the abdomen.

No condition report was immediately available.

The approximate 10:15 a.m. shooting took place on Bogard Street at the home of the alleged shooter, Janice Cross, no age available, said Greene County Sheriff Terry Pierce.

The victim then reportedly walked across the street to his mobile home at 230 Bogard St. where police and medical personnel were summoned.

Cross held up in her home for more than 30 minutes, while armed police officers closed the streets at the boundaries of the residences and waited.

Cross came out of the frame house after Chief Deputy Major Mike Hasler requested over a loudspeaker in his police SUV she do so. A short time later, she walked toward police without incident.

Details about how the incident started are sketchy, but it's believed a domestic dispute developed into a shooting, according to police reports at the scene.

Pierce pointed out there were several gunshots into a side window of the Cross residence.

Pierce and Nash both said they were familiar with the couple and units from their respective departments had investigated past incidents at each of their residences.
The sheriff described the pair as being in a relationship.

A woman sitting on her porch described the neighborhood as peaceful and a place you would not expect to have a shooting. However, the same woman did say that police officers have been at both the Cross and George residences in the past to investigate domestic disturbances.

Cross has not been charged in connection with the shooting pending further investigation.

ISP Public Information Officer Sgt. Curt Durnil said that investigation is ongoing.
Assisting ISP at the scene were personnel from the Greene County Sheriff's Department and the Lyons Police Department.
