(BLOOMINGTON) - 52-year-old Hugh Garner Jr., of Bloomfield, was arrested after police say he filled a soda bottle with gasoline, taped a spark plug to the cap and affixed the homemade explosive device to a woman’s truck, along with a note that threatened her life.
Abby Tonsing of the Herald Times reports that Garner was arrested on a warrant on felony charges of attempted arson and intimidation and misdemeanor charges of criminal mischief.
He was released from the Monroe County Jail Saturday morning after posting bond.
Police say on Feb. 1 they dismantled the homemade explosive that was wedged near the exhaust manifold of a woman's truck in a parking lot in the 400 block of North Rogers Street.
Bloomington Police Sgt. Lucas Tate says the woman told police she found a threatening note under the windshield wiper of her 1997 Dodge truck that read, "Go home or DOA.
The woman reported she started the truck, found that the engine was running rough and noticed that her brakes weren't working.
After calling a friend for help and popping the hood, she called police. Police say the woman and Garner are acquainted.
Police collected DNA evidence from the soda bottle and obtained a search warrant for Garner's cellphone records.
Tate says those records "put the phone in the area the night this happened." Garner initially told police he was not in Bloomington that evening.
