Mariah Huff Crowned 56th Miss Jackson County

Last updated on Tuesday, July 24, 2012

(BROWNSTOWN) - A week of grandstand entertainment commenced in style with the annual Jackson County Fair Queen Pageant on Sunday at the fairgrounds.

Jessica Squires of the Tribune reports that Mariah Huff, 20, of Brownstown was crowned as the 56th Miss Jackson County with First Runner-up Megan Quade, 18, of Seymour and Second Runner-up Haley Hackman, 18, of Brownstown. Kirstin Meyers was selected as Miss Congeniality.

Huff was all smiles when she was announced as the fair queen.

Chairman of the Pageant Committee Jeanette Hackman said the pageant is important for the girls.

"They all want to be queen," Hackman said. "They were excited all day."

The 28 contestants were judged in evening wear, professional wear and a three-minute interview with judges.

"We have had 54 before," said Hackman of the number of contestants. "Our county's pageant usually has a bigger crowd than most of the fairs."

Ranging in age from 16 to 20, Sunday's contestants came from every corner of the county, including Seymour, Brownstown, Crothersville, Medora and Norman and were sponsored by various clubs within the county.

Before passing on her crown, 2011 Queen Fayeann Hurley said the Jackson County Fair is the best fair in the state.

"It was an honor to trade my name, Fayeann Hurley, for Miss Jackson County," Hurley said.

"As I close this chapter of my life, I welcome the new girl who will take the crown," Hurley added.

As Miss Jackson County, Huff will go on to represent the county in the state pageant at the Indiana State Fair in August, where Hurley made second runner-up last year.

Huff is the daughter of Melissa Huff of Brownstown. She was sponsored by the Country Friends Extension Homemakers Club.
