LIFE Pencil Project Gears Up For School With Free Backpack Program

Last updated on Wednesday, July 25, 2012

(BEDFORD) - Students will be returning to school and Lawrence County’s two LIFE offices are packing backpacks for students.

The annual LIFE Pencil Project is currently accepting applications for the free backpack program and donations of supplies.

About 200 backpacks are given away annually to students in North Lawrence and Mitchell schools.

Laura Bailey, director of operations for Lawrence InterFaith Endeavor, said families can fill out applications to receive backpacks now until July 27 at LIFE offices in Bedford and Mitchell.

She said backpacks are the main item LIFE needs. Backpacks should be new. Other supplies include lined filler paper, binders, notebooks, folders (with and without prongs), scissors, pens and pencils, large pink erasers, colored pencils and rulers.

Baily said they need everything, but crayons because they have plenty.

The backpack distribution will be done from the LIFE offices this year. That's a change from years past when it was done at the fairgrounds. Bailey said LIFE wanted a more accessible location for families.

Distribution will begin July 30 and continue for two weeks. Families will receive a time to pick up their backpack when they submit the application.
