Family Pets Killed In Columbus Fire

Last updated on Sunday, July 29, 2012

(COLUMBUS) - A pet dog and pet cat were killed in a fire Friday afternoon that also left a firefighter with heat exhaustion.

Firefighters thought the residence fire in the 7100 block of West Lowell Road in Columbus within minutes.

But the ceiling continued to burn and the firefighters had to call for backup.

Firefighters from at lease five departments responded to the fire, including Columbus, Harrison, German, and Clay townships, Clifford and the City of Columbus.

The home, belonging to Billy and Brenda Martin, had multiple ceilings, which made it difficult for firefighters to reach the fire.

The firefighters had to remove several guns and ammunition to keep it from exploding in the fire. They said the heat from the asphalt wiped them out. One firefighter was treated for heat exhaustion.

The responding officers were able to save a kitten, but a cat and a dog were killed in the blaze.
