Bedford Firefighters Extingush Burning Van

Last updated on Wednesday, July 11, 2012

(BEDFORD) - The Bedford Fire Department extinguished a van fire Tuesday afternoon at the intersection of John Williams Boulevard and R Street.

"It was fully involved when firefighters arrived just after 5 p.m.," said Bedford Fire Chief Jon Wagner. "It was destroyed. When Engine 2 arrived they quickly called for Rescue 1 to assist."

The 2000 Pontiac Van is owned by Mike Wright. Wagner says the fire started in the engine compartment and the cause is under investigation.

While firefighters were hooking a hose to the hydrant, others were extinguishing the fuel that was spilling on the road and entering the sewer system.

"They dyke the area to stop it from entering the system and used a CO2 extinguisher on the fuel fire," Wagner says.

Firefighters us CO2 on gasoline fires because water can cause the fuel to splash and spread.

"We then notified Lester Tipton (superintendent of the water department) so the plant can treat the storm water," Wagner says.

Wagner says firefighters put more than at 1,000 gallons of water on the blaze.
