(BLOOMINGTON) - Winston Wood, convicted Thursday of leaving the scene of a fatal Lake Monroe boating accident, will remain in Monroe County Jail until his sentencing, prosecutors said Friday.
"He was taken into custody immediately," Monroe County chief deputy prosecutor Bob Miller said. "Mr. Wood will remain in custody until the sentencing hearing, at least, and then he'll be sentenced at that time."
Abby Tonsing, of the Herald-Times reports, a jury of 11 women and one man found Wood guilty of leaving the scene of a June 2010 Lake Monroe boating accident that killed a grandmother and one of her grandsons and injured her husband.
Wood, 21, 9111 Green Ridge Lane, was booked into the Monroe County Jail by correctional officers at 8:02 p.m. Thursday on two felony charges of leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death and one felony charge of leaving the scene of an accident resulting in serious bodily injury. He is being held on no bond.
Wood could face a jail term of two to eight years for each of the two charges of leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death and six months to three years on the charge of causing serious bodily injury. Each charge may also carry a $10,000 fine.
Wood was found guilty of all three count by a Monroe County jury Thursday evening. His trial started Tuesday morning.
In the June 28, 2010, accident on Lake Monroe, Wood's Cobalt ski boat and a Ranger bass boat, driven by James "Rusty" Collier of Bedford, collided. The crash killed Collier's wife, Susan, and their 8-year-old grandson Gage Pruett. The crash also injured one of Collier's legs.
Gage's two triplet brothers, Dillion and J.T., survived the crash.
Collier testified Tuesday that no one in Wood's boat helped him, and Wood sped away from the crash, even after he specifically screamed for help in saving his wife from the water.
On Friday, Judge Jane Craney had not yet scheduled Wood's sentencing, and Miller said he anticipated that might happen next week.
