Two Arrested In Connection With Thefts From Vehicles In Oolitic

Last updated on Saturday, June 9, 2012

(OOLITIC) - Oolitic Town Marshall Bill Allen says police arrested two teenagers in connection with thefts from vehicles in Oolitic that happened earlier this week.

Michael Parker, 18, Oolitic, and a 16-year-old were arrested on several charges related to the vehicle break-ins.

Police say the teenagers had some of the stolen items in their possession when they were arrested.

"The investigation led officers to two male subjects. One subject was 18-year-old Michael Parker, who had been released from boys school last Thursday and the other was a 16 year old juvenile," according to Allen. "When officers located the subjects they had several of the stolen items with them."

The thefts happened during the overnight hours Tuesday within a two-block area in Oolitic, Allen said. Access to the locked vehicles was gained by throwing a brick through the passenger-side window.

Parker was booked into the Lawrence County Security Center and the juvenile was released to his mother and cited into court.

Parker was charged with six counts of theft, possession of a Schedule II controlled substance, 11 counts of unlawful entry of a motor vehicle and three counts of criminal mischief.

The juvenile was charged with six counts of theft, possession of a Schedule II controlled substance, 11 counts of unlawful entry of a motor vehicle, three counts of criminal mischief and trespassing.

The juvenile's name wasn't available as of press time.

While thefts from vehicles have been common in the past year or so, law enforcement doesn't believe these were related to others because it was the first case of rash of "smash and grabs."

Reserve Officer Jeff Franklin assisted with the investigation.
