(BLOOMINGTON) - Police arrested two 20-year-old men in Indianapolis Sunday morning on preliminary charges of robbery, attempted murder and animal cruelty after shooting a man and his dog Friday night on the Bloomington’s north side.
While police were not prepared to release a motive for the crime, information from the victim, who was shot in the stomach and groin areas, led police to Nigel Sinclair Dowdy and LaVon D. Bartlett.
The wounded man told police two black males entered his residence in the 2600 block of North Walnut Street and attempted to rob him during a dispute, shooting the dog in the paw and then him in a struggle outside of the apartment.
The victim, 20, was in stable condition at IU Health Bloomington Hospital. No information was available on the dog's status Sunday.
Dowdy was booked into Monroe County Jail on preliminary charges of robbery, theft and criminal recklessness. His bond was set at $50,000 surety, $500 cash. Bartlett, who the victim said was the shooter, faces preliminary charges of attempted murder, robbery, criminal recklessness, cruelty to animals and possession of a handgun without a permit.
Lt. Faron Lake said the two suspects, when faced with the evidence, confessed to the crime and surrendered without incident.
This was the second shooting in a week in Bloomington. Police apprehended Carlos Roberto "Marvin" Nunez, 24, in Indianapolis on Wednesday after a shooting at the pool of College Mall Apartments Tuesday night.
