(UNDATED) - The number of fatal crashes on Indiana highways has jumped this year, and State Police are trying to cut down on the bad driving they say is leading to many of them.

While the number of wrecks in urban areas is down slightly this year, rural crashes and deaths have raised dramatically.

State Police say they will begin a number of efforts to stop this, including additional patrols in areas where troopers aren't normally seen as well as the use of all their enforcement tools; marked and unmarked patrol cars and the State Police helicopter.

State Police also say many of the fatalities this year have occurred on county roads where they don't normally patrol.
