Solid Waste Teams With Junior Leaders To Tackle Recycling

Last updated on Friday, June 29, 2012

(BEDFORD) - Determined to do her part, Rebecca Stoops, is serving as an intern for the Lawrence County Solid Waste Management District.

One of her primary goals is to raise awareness about the value of recycling.

On Wednesday, at the local Recycling Center on J Street, she teamed with Junior Leaders representing Lawrence County 4-H to paint posters and decorate trash bins in preparation for the 2012 county fair, slated for July 7-14.

The group will be collecting plastic bottles and cans at the fair. The materials collected will be sold with the proceeds going to 4-H.

Graham Ormiston, the Junior Leader heading up the project, said this marks the third year for the recycling project.

Ormiston says his crew empties the bins and separates the bottles and cans.
Jaylyn Harmon and Kara Parkes made sure the recycling bins were easily identifiable with environmental messages.

People are asked not to throw random trash into the bins.

The group will also be collecting tin cans, cardboard, plastic bags and vegetable oil from the food vendors at the fair. The vegetable oil will be converted to diesel by Logan Felts, the agriculture teacher at BNL.

For more information about the recycling project, contact Stoops at 278-8845.
