Seymour Teen Faces Rape Charge

Last updated on Friday, June 8, 2012

(SEYMOUR) - A 17-year-old Jackson County youth faces rape and criminal confinement charges related to an incident reported last week, police say.

"We received a call on May 30 from the emergency room at Schneck Medical Center about a woman seeking attention for a sexual assault," Seymour Police Detective C. J. Foster said Wednesday of the events that led to the arrest of Benjamin Roberts. That assault was reported at 9: 38 p. m. May 30.

Foster said after talking to the Seymour woman reporting the assault, investigators tried talking with Roberts.

"He refused to talk to us," Foster said.

Roberts was initially booked into the Jackson County Juvenile Detention Center in Brownstown early May 31, but he was waived to Jackson Circuit Court on Tuesday afternoon.

Foster said Roberts had reportedly been at the woman's apartment in the 200 block of South Vine Street and left before coming back and assaulting her. He said investigators believe the two were acquaintances.

Rape is a Class B felony, punishable by six to 20 years in prison, while criminal confinement is a Class D felony.
