(MITCHELL) - A fire destroyed a modular home in Mitchell Tuesday afternoon.
The home on the 300 block of Bartlett Drive is owned by Barry Duncan.
Barry is the nephew of Mitchell Volunteer Fire Department Chief Tyler Duncan.
Tyler Duncan says the blaze started on the front porch and was fully involved when firefighters arrived at 5:11 p.m.
"Barry had left to drop his wife off at work and had left three of his four children with the neighbors and took one of the children with him," Duncan says. "But the oldest an 11-year-old was in the home when the fire started and managed to crawl out a window and escape."
Firefighters were able to rescue three dogs and a hamster from the home.
"One of the dogs had a pretty bad cut across his muzzle and suffered burns," Duncan says.
Duncan says firefighters did an excellent job at putting the fire out quickly.
"It was a very quick knockdown," Duncan says. "We put Marion on standby, but didn't need them."
The state fire marshal will be on the scene this morning to determine what caused the fire.
"I am just waiting on a call on when he will be here this morning," Duncan says. "There is a lot of fire, water and smoke damage. The family may be able to save a few personal items."
The family stayed at a local motel last night.
