Fire Destroys Car And Damages Bedford Home

Last updated on Wednesday, June 6, 2012

(BEDFORD) - A Monday evening fire destroyed a car and damaged a house in the 300 block of Briarwood Lane, according to Marshall Township Volunteer Fire Department Chief Chad Hayes.

The car and home belonged to Jason and Traci Simmerman.

No one was injured during the incident. The home is a split level with an attached garage.

When Traci Simmerman arrived home, she pulled the car in the driveway close to the garage and exited the vehicle, Hayes said.

A neighbor noticed the vehicle was on fire and officials were notified. Firefighters were on scene at 6:05 p.m., five minutes after the call had been made to county dispatch.

Flames from the car, however, "were already impinging on the house," Hayes said. And the fire had broken the garage windows, started melting the garage door and was filling the house with smoke.

Some of the home has wood siding and a few of those shingles were burned, Hayes added.

Assisted by Oolitic VFD, the firefighters made sure there were no fires in the siding and ventilated the smoke from the home. Firefighters remained on the scene until 7:49 p.m.

"I think they were going to stay the night in the house," Hayes said.
