(BEDFORD) - The final round of Brain Games XI turned out to be a tournament of champions as four-time winner Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home squared off in the championship against two-time winner and defending champion, Little Theatre of Bedford.
Jeff Routh, of the Times-Mail reports Ferguson-Lee defeated Tri-County Builders and Steele & Steele to advance to the championship and Little Theatre beat Jason Jackson/Edward Jones and Judge Michael Robbins' team to make it to the final game, setting up a rematch of last year's championship. But this year, there was a different outcome as Ferguson-Lee's Ann-Margret team came away with a decisive, 230-140 victory.
It was nip-and-tuck during the opening minutes of the game as John Gohman of Little Theatre and Brian Hawkins of Ferguson-Lee traded answers. Hawkins gave Ferguson-Lee a 20-point lead when he knew Evansville was the largest Indiana city south of U.S. 40 and the Rose Bowl is played each year in Pasadena, Calif. Gohman pulled LTB back to a tie when he knew the "m" in E=mc2 stood for mass and Harry Truman was the U.S. president who ordered the atomic bomb to be dropped on Hiroshima, Japan in 1945.
With the score tied at 40-40, Hawkins reeled off five straight correct answers, Connie Bailey added a sixth, and then Hawkins added another to his total to put Ferguson-Lee up, 110-40, and on the road to victory.
This is the fifth time Ferguson-Lee has claimed the Brain Games title, but the fourth time for this team. Ferguson-Lee, with a much different team, won the initial Brain Games in 2002. Winning team members are Hawkins, Bailey, Tim and Jane Goodwin and Lowell Bailey.
Results of other games in Thursday's bracket were: Steele & Steele defeated Smokey Bear Corps, 200-180, in the first game; Ferguson-Lee beat Tri-County Builders, 260-150, in game two; Little Theatre over Jason Jackson/Edward Jones, 230-130; and Judge Michael Robbins beat Lehigh Cement, 210-130.
In the semi-final round it was Ferguson-Lee beating Steele & Steele, 250-90; and Little Theatre over Judge Michael Robbins, 170-110.
In addition to the honor of being champions of Brain Games XI, the Ferguson-Lee team received a $300 cash prize, gold medallions, and the traveling trophy for the sponsor. Little Theatre received $200 cash prize and silver medallions. The prize money for the Brain Games was donated by Pynco.
Brain Games has been presented annually since 2002 by the Lawrence County Museum of History. It is one of the organization's largest fundraisers of the year. It was so popular, a teen version was spun-off and is conducted each fall.
