BBQ At The Quarry Set For June 29th

(BEDFORD) - The third-annual BBQ at the Quarry is set for Friday, June 29 and Saturday, June 30 on Bedford’s downtown square.

The non-sanctioned event, designed for local teams to showcase their culinary skills, is sponsored by Bedford Revitalization, Inc.

The event, organized by Ryan Griffith and Greg Morris, offers a weekend of good food and local entertainment.

Activities commence Friday, June 28 at 5 p.m. as Terry Kirkman heads up a limestone carving demonstration at Lawrence County Museum on the north side of the square.

At 6 p.m., Sean Steele and Grainfed play in Harp Commons, followed at 9:30 by Larry Summerton and Summertime Band.

Saturday's events begin at 10 a.m. with the limestone carving exhibition at the museum.

A car show starts at 11 a.m. on the south side of the square, with the annual poker run to depart from Bedford Federal Savings Bank parking lot at 1:30 p.m..

Registration for the scenic motorcycle ride begins at 11:30 a.m.

Blind Rebel takes to the Harp Commons stage at 6 p.m., followed by Jeff Day and Stone Carnival at 9:30 p.m.

Griffith noted the prize money for this year's contest is up to $2,000, thanks to sponsors Brent Maudlin State Farm Insurance, Sipes Body and Glass, Verizon Wireless Zone Division of Bedford Cellular, and Stone Pig Smokehouse.

The entry fee is $50 per team, and the cooking categories are chicken, pork butt, pork ribs and brisket. All meat must be cooked on site with charcoal, wood or wood pellet cookers. Propane or electric heat cookers are not allowed.

Contest meats must be contained in original packaging and will be inspected prior to competition. Anyone wishing to compete for reserve champion or grand champion distinction must register for all four categories.

The cook's meeting is scheduled for Friday at 7 p.m., followed by meat inspection. On Saturday, prepared meat must be turned into the panel of judges at the following times: 2 p.m. (chicken), 2:30 p.m. (pork butt), 3 p.m. (pork butt), 3:30 p.m. (pork ribs), 3:30 p.m. (brisket).

The awards presentation is at 6 p.m.

Griffith said Huey's BBQ, Smokey B's BBQ, Corey's Dutch Boy Double-Decker, and Ritter's Frozen Custard have been designated official vendors this year and will be serving food along the square.
