17-Year-Old Bloomington Girl Reports Sexual Assult After Drug Deal Goes Bad

Last updated on Sunday, June 3, 2012

(BLOOMINGTON) - A dispute between a band of juveniles during a drug deal boiled over with the sexual assault of a 17-year-old girl early Friday after the group was sold a batch of fake ecstasy pills, according to police.

Jon Blau, of the Herald-Times reports, officers responded to a call at 12:44 a.m. at the 700 block of West Gourley Pike and learned a girl and her group of friends had exchanged $50 for what they believed to be the street drug "E," only to receive what they suspected were vitamins. The girl asked for her money back, but the male suspect insisted he had already handed the money off to a confidant.

With the dealer leading, the group searched for a car where the money supposedly was, moving from the original transaction point at the 1700 block of North Kinser Pike and into the woods leading to West Gourley Pike. The girl told police that the dealer eventually became hostile and grabbed her by the shoulders, attempting to lift her dress and remove her underwear.

The girl defended herself by punching the suspect in the groin area, but he ran off into the woods as her friends tended to her.

Detective John Kovach said the Bloomington Police Department will use the victim's prior contacts with the suspect, including a couple of text messages and a Facebook friendship, to make contact with the man. Depending on the suspect's age, he could face preliminary charges of dealing a controlled substance, because it was a "look-alike" product.

There remains a possibility, Kovach said, that the juveniles could face charges of attempting to purchase ecstasy. The girl was brought to the hospital with injuries to her arm; she suffered minor bruising tripping over a log in the chase preceding the assault.
