(BEDFORD) - The United Way Day of Caring is set for May 12, and the 12 agencies that serve Lawrence and Orange counties have plenty of jobs on their to-do lists for eager volunteers.
No special skill or talent is needed, just a desire to help a nonprofit agency that benefits the community. Agencies like the Boys Club, Girls Club, Red Cross, LIFE, Salvation Army and Seniors Citizens centers can benefit from having extra pairs of hands, said Angie Timan, a United Way board member.
Volunteers should report to the Limestone Girls Club for check-in at 8 a.m. The Girls Club will provide breakfast. Teams of workers will be go to assigned areas and work from 8:30 a.m. until noon.
Day of Caring is the same day as the National Letter Carriers Stamp Out Hunger canned food drive. For several years, Day of Caring volunteers have worked at LIFE to get the food storage area ready for the tons of food that will be brought to the food pantries in Bedford and Salvation Army. Timan said a team will be assigned at LIFE and Salvation Army again this year.
All volunteers will receive a T-shirt and snack. Volunteers under 18 must have a signed waiver form, and children younger than 12 much be accompanied by an adult.
