(BLOOMINGTON) - Northbound lanes of State Road 37 were closed Friday morning in Monroe County after a box truck similar to a trash truck crashed.

The crash happened just south of Vernal Pike around 10:48 a.m. after a dump truck veered out of the right lane of the highway and plowed down a steep embankment into the woods below.

No word is yet available about the status of the driver or his condition, or what caused his truck to leave the highway. He was an employee of K&S Rolloff Waste Removal of Bloomington.

A medical helicopter was called to the scene due to the seriousness of the injured driver, officials said.

Cpl. Chris Sears, of the Indiana State Police, said. The helicopter left the scene at 11:55 a.m.

Some drivers became impatient and crossed the median and joined southbound Ind. 37 traffic to avoid waiting. Others turned around and headed the wrong way up the Ind. 48 Bypass exit ramp.

Bland's Wrecker Service worked to remove the dump truck from the woods after the driver was evacuated. While they continued work, police opened the left lane of Ind. 37 for traffic just before noon.
