Teens Will Have Hard Time Finding Summer Jobs

Last updated on Thursday, May 3, 2012

(UNDATED) - The Bureau of Labor and Statistics says this upcoming summer will be the toughest summer for teens to find a job since World War II.

In fact, half of all teens will not find jobs this summer.

Still, the Indiana Youth Institute says there are things teens can do if they want to find work.

Be persistent and proactive.

Show prospective employers you really want that job.

"Even now, a full month before school is out, they need to be out now looking for that employment opportunity, and not just where they see a help wanted sign, but at any of the local employers near their neighborhood or near their community," said Bill Stanczykiewicz of the IYI. "Employers love to see that initiative from kids, and that can help put their application towards the top of the stack."

The Indiana Youth Institute says by the year 2020, the U.S. will have one of the youngest work forces in the world.

So it's important for today's youth to learn good work-related skills now in order to help them as adults.
