Suspected Killer Helps Bloomington Police Search For Remains

Last updated on Friday, May 18, 2012

(BLOOMINGTON) - A man suspected in a series of killings helped police with a homicide investigation in Bloomington on Thursday.

William Clyde Gibson was out of jail with detectives for several hours in Bloomington, police said.

Police were quick to point out that the investigation was not linked to missing Indiana University student Lauren Spierer.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office said that a tip led New Albany Police to a wooded area near the Monroe County Airport in search of a female's remains.

The search began around 11 a.m. and lasted for several hours. Police did not recover a body, but did take soil samples.

Gibson is charged with killing 75-year-old Christine Whitis, his late mother's best friend, and 45-year-old Karen Hodella, a woman he met in a bar more than ten years ago.

He's also the suspect in the death of 35-year-old Stephanie Kirk, of Charlestown, whose body was found buried in Gibson's yard. He has not been charged in connection with Kirk's death.

So far, police have searched his property, a site near Utica, the Ohio River and the latest site for more evidence. The investigation is said to span an 800 mile area.
