(UNDATED) - For the 20th year, United States postal workers will collect food donations to help “Stamp Out Hunger.”
Residents can place a bag of nonperishable food items at the location where the carrier delivers their mail prior to mail delivery time this morning. Their carriers will pick it up and deliver it. Suggested donations include canned soup, meats, fish, vegetables, fruits and juices; boxed goods, such as cereal; pasta and rice.
The food stays local and will be delivered to local food panties and churches.
The Stamp Out Hunger food drive is designed to provide food to local food pantries that might otherwise face depleted stocks during the summer months. According to the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC), food banks across the country continue to experience increased demand for emergency food assistance.
Letter carriers have collected more than a billion pounds of food since the program's inception. They've collected more than 70 million pounds for each of the past eight years, according to NALC.
A USDA study measuring food security in the United States stated nearly 49 million people live in "food insecure" homes. Of those people, 16 million were children and 9 million were over the age of 50.
The Campbell Soup Company will kick off this year's Stamp Out Hunger drive with a pledge to donate 1 million pounds of food to the hunger-relief charity Feeding America.
