Special Olympics Today At BNL Track

(BEDFORD) - More than 250 athletes will compete in the Special Olympics today.

Students in North Lawrence Community Schools and students served by the Joint Services Special Education Cooperative will take the field at the Bedford North Lawrence High School track.

Opening ceremonies begin at 9:30 a.m. with the parade of athletes and Special Olympics oath.

Running, wheelchair and walking events begin at 10 a.m. followed by tennis ball, Frisbee throw, long jump and other events.

Participating students are from BNL, Mitchell, Eastern Greene, Orleans, Brownstown, Shoals and Medora. Residents of Garden Villa, Res-Care and past students also will participate.

Jessica Adams, occupational therapist with Joint Services, said more than 250 volunteers help with the games.

High school students from BNL, Mitchell and Brownstown will serve as a buddy to a Special Olympic athlete.

The games wrap up Friday with breakfast, relays, awards and dancing.
