(BLOOMINGTON) - The Monroe County Parks and Recreation board has voted to prohibit smoking and tobacco chewing at all five county parks - Karst Farm Park, Flatwoods Park, Will Detmer Park, Ferguson Nature Park and Jackson Creek Park.
Signs banning the practices will soon be posted at each park. Monroe County Parks and Recreation board president Evelyn Harrell says it is a policy not an ordinance or law. There are no enforcement efforts or fines. They are hoping the signs will empower staff members and non-smokers to point out the policy if they see someone smoking.
At this month's board meeting, two members of the Monroe County Board of Health - Bloomington pediatrician Carol Litten Touloukian and Margaret Joseph Zimmerman - spoke in greater detail about the health risks associated with second-hand smoke and discarded cigarette butts. After some discussion, the Monroe County Parks board voted to ban tobacco use at the parks.
