(BLOOMINGTON) - Bloomington Police Department Cpt. Joe Qualters says officers are investigating a possible connection between the June 3, 2011, disappearance of Lauren Spierer and Clyde Gibson of New Albany, who is accused of killing three women.
"A detective from the Bloomington Police Department has been assigned to make an inquiry with investigators in New Albany regarding the Clyde Gibson case they are investigating," Qualters said.
Indiana University student Lauren Spierer, 21, disappeared after a night out with friends in June. Bloomington Police officials say there's no indication that Gibson may be tied to Spierer's disappearance.
"We view this as the responsible thing to do as part of our ongoing investigation and it is much like the inquiries we make on unidentified bodies that become known to us from other jurisdictions," Qualters said in a written statement. "We are certainly interested in anyone who comes to the attention of law enforcement for targeting women as victims.That is the sole purpose for the inquiry."
Gibson has a history of targeting women as victims and is a registered sex offender. In late April, police found the body of a missing woman buried in his yard.
The woman was 35 year-old Stephanie Marie Kirk, who went missing one month before when she was expected to be at a bar. He is also accused in the murders of two other women, Christine Whitis and Karen Hodella.
