The inaugural Independence 5K Run/Walk will be held Saturday, June 30, with registration opening at 7 a.m. in the Pekin Park.

The walk starts at the park shelterhouse and walkers/runners will end up at that location as well. The route winds through the picturesque countryside outside the town.

Those who pre-register pay just $20, while those signing up the day of the walk will pay $25. Participants will receive a free T-shirt.

Trophies will be presented to the first and second place finishers in the men's and women's groups. Ribbons will be given to the top three finishers by age group.
