(DUBOIS) - New storm sewers are now installed in Dubois and town officials hope repaved streets are next.
Construction of the new storm sewers finished about four months ahead of schedule and residents are hoping their basements will not flood anymore.
Gerald Terwiske was a member of the local committee that spearheaded the storm sewer replacement effort. He says flooding in town, especially during heavy rains, has been a problem for more than 10 years.
Terwisky says the town's aging sewer system was developing sinkholes up to four feet in diameter in some places.
Terwiske and the local committee applied for and received a $1 million federal grant to pay for the new sewers. Dubois County paid $400,000 toward the project as well.
This past winter's warmer than expected weather allowed crews to work pretty much non-stop to get the sewers installed in about eight months.
Terwiske says now that the sewers have repaired, he says the county commissioners will hopefully approve new street paving in town that was put on hold until the new sewers were installed.
