New Fruit & Flowers Trial Receives Grant

Last updated on Thursday, May 10, 2012

(BEDFORD) - Lt. Gov. Becky Skillman recently announced the Southern Indiana Regional Marketing Cooperative’s new Fruits & Flowers Trail has received a $9,000 trail grant through the Indiana Office of Tourism Development.

The state is investing funds to assist communities in developing, expanding and marketing trails that will drive tourism in Indiana communities. Nineteen organizations from across the state applied for grant funding.

The Fruits & Flowers Trail will feature southern Indiana's rural heritage and locally grown favorites to travelers beginning in fall 2012. The trail will highlight local venues such as retail businesses, orchards, gardens, u-picks, festivals/events and restaurants. Travelers will be encouraged to pick up a recipe card featuring a locally grown item or a gardening tip card featuring a locally grown plant.

The trail will be developed and promoted by the Southern Indiana Regional Marketing Cooperative, an organization created almost 20 years ago to facilitate partnerships between neighboring convention and visitors bureaus and chambers of commerce to most effectively motivate travel to the southern Indiana region.

Lawrence County Tourism is an active member of SIRMC, which represents 18 adjacent Indiana counties and is the geographically largest tourism marketing co-op in the state.
"The new Fruits & Flowers Trail will promote our county's homegrown favorites and rural heritage to out-of-town visitors," said Dave Branneman, executive director of the Lawrence County Tourism Commission.

"I believe this grant will allow us to bring in new visitors, who will spend time in the county and money with our local business owners."

Businesses that fit the Fruits & Flowers theme should contact the Lawrence County Visitor's Center to learn about opportunities to be involved.
