Last updated on Wednesday, May 23, 2012

(BEDFORD) - Rita Kersh received the president’s gavel for a second term as chief officer of the Bedford Noon Lions Club on May 2.

Newell Clifton, past district governor of Indiana District E1, conducted the installation of the club's officers for 2012-13. Kersh is a 1979 graduate of Bedford North Lawrence High School and holds a master's degree from Western Michigan University in blind rehabilitation teaching. She taught for more than 20 years as a deaf-blind specialist in Mississippi.

Since returning to Bedford, Kersh has remained involved in helping blind and deaf people through the Southern Indiana Center for Independent Living, South Central Association for the Visually Impaired and the American Council for the Blind of Indiana. She is president of SICIL and is past president of SCAVI.

Being both blind and deaf herself, she is known in North Lawrence schools for showing classes how she has adapted her abilities to her surroundings and how the students can assist someone who is blind or deaf.

In accepting the Lions Club presidency a second year, Kersh said, "I hope to improve on what we Lions set forth last year and to grow and be more active in our community."

Clifton also installed Luckie Jennings, first vice president; Bob Evans, second vice president; Donna Rose, secretary; and Kathy Reising, treasurer.

Others installed were Vivian Fishel, attendance director; Jack Voigtschild, membership director; Bob Evans, tail twister; Mike Sowder, Lion tamer; and Janice Payne and Dolly Sowder, board of directors members.

Another high point of the May 2 meeting was the induction of a new member. Past President Jason Jackson led the club in inducting Jim Pittman. Sponsoring Pittman was Jack Voigtschild.
