(WASHINGTON) - Former Washington High School assistant principal LeAnne Kelley and current Pike Central principal has been named the next principal at WHS.

T. Daniel Lancaster, of Washington Times-Herald, reports Kelley was selected Monday in a special school board meeting to take over for Paul White, who will be moving on to an assistant superintendent position within the corporation.

Kelley had been at Pike Central for the last 12 years, but before that had been the assistant principal at WHS for two years.

"I was very proud to start my administrative career at Washington and now I hope to be able to end it here," she said.

Kelley, a Franklin native, but a Washington resident for many years, was also a math and physical education teacher at Indian Creek High School, and girls basketball and tennis coach there.

She said she is very proud of the time that she spent at Pike Central.

"We improved our graduation rate when I was there, and I felt like we had a great relationship with the staff," said Kelley.

She was particularly proud of having Pike Central participate in "Project Lead the Way," where the school was one of 16 model schools in both engineering and biomedical. The success earned the school a trip to the White House to meet President Barack Obama.

Kelley said her personal and professional philosophy has always been that "everything we do is in the best interest of the students."

White, who was involved with the hiring process, was very positive about the addition of Kelley to the staff.

"We are really excited and fortunate to get someone with LeAnne's track record," said White. "I learned early on that she was someone I could count on for assistance over the last several years and I continue looking forward to working with her.

"I think there are a lot of things we have similar philosophies with, but she is also someone who will bring her own unique perspective. She is a real leader."

Kelley is expected to take over on July 1.
