Greene County Commissioners Support Fire/Ambulance Station Project

Last updated on Thursday, May 24, 2012

(BLOOMFIELD) - The Greene County Commissioners on Monday passed a resolution of support for the Richland-Taylor Fire/Ambulance Station Project at the WestGate at Crane Technology Park.

Nick Schneider of the Greene County Daily World reports the new fire station will be constructed adjacent to the Scotland Meadows Business Park in the WestGate Tech Park on land purchased and then donated to the township by the Greene County Redevelopment Commission.

In past meetings, Taylor Township Trustee Chuck Crouch and Fire Chief Randy Baker explained to county officials that the new station is needed to provide more direct access to Interstate 69 for first responder calls. The new station will be located less than a mile from the U.S. 231/I-69 interchange.

Southern Indiana Development Commission (SIDC) representative Matt Seward explained that the county commissioners, on behalf of Taylor Township, has applied for a $400,000 grant from the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs (OCRA) to assist with the project's financing.

There is no county money involved in the $514,000 project.

The Greene County Redevelopment Commission agreed to put up $245,765, the Greene County Foundation has pledged $18,500, and Taylor Township will pay $250,000 in the form of a bank loan. Seward reported that OCRA has approved the grant and his firm is awaiting release of funds.

The OCRA grant will assist with the cost of construction, engineering, inspection, administrative expenses, environmental review, labor standards, legal fees and a rate consultant.

The fire department is planning to build an approximate 60 feet by 100 feet fire station that will also house a Greene County Ambulance Service unit and housing facility.

The commissioners, on Monday, also approved an ambulance sublease agreement resolution that provides no cost for housing the ambulance at the fire station, other than utility costs.
