(BROWNSTOWN) - Jackson County Board of Commissioners approved matching funds for a $ 500,000 federal grant application for a proposed storm drainage project in the Vallonia area.
Trena Carter with Administration Resources association told commissioners the state has reduced the maximum amount of a grant from $600,000 to $500,000 and that
the number of grant cycles had been reduced. "We get one shot at it this year," Carter said of the process. In the past, there were two grant cycles annually.
If funded, the project would see improvements to the storm drainage system in Vallonia, including acquisition of land for installation of a detention basin, enclosed storm drainage along Water Street and drainage improvements to St. Louis and Church streets. Carter said the county's local match would be $ 134,126. County highway superintendent Warren Martin said match could come from the commissioners' fund or the county's Rainy Day Fund.
Carter said the application deadline is June 8. "On Aug. 1, we will find out if we were successful," Carter said.
Indiana Department of Community and Rural Affairs administers the state Community Development Block Grant program.
The commissioners' approval came during a meeting Tuesday at the courthouse annex.
